Dev Diary #3 - Knowledge Cards as main mechanic
In previous posts I mentioned cards and them being information holders. But what does it mean to a game apart for just a peculiar kind of journal?
Asking cards
The thing is - all cards are usable at various moments of the game. You can unlock new hidden conversation choices with correct cards used at the right moment, or use them to ask questions and start side conversation on a themes of your choice.
For instance you get a personal card about each of your patrons. If you want to discuss this person in particular with someone else, you can drop a card during conversation. If your conversant has something to say the side conversation will start. You can do it at any time - the only limit is card points - the special kind of points for each conversation that represent the desire of a person to talk to you. People are usually more conversable if you befriend them... or pour enough booz.
There is a card for every important knowledge in the game and each time you use a card on someone you should think if that person could tell you anything of interest. As well as starting a chat about some secret a person have no idea of you'll give up it right away.
Deducting information
There's also another thing about knowledge cards - the information written on them is not always a solid one. In that case you usually have so called "gossip cards" - a card with two statements one of which is correct and the other is false of "hearsay cards" - a vague knowledge of a matter. You can always make knowledge more solid by asking people, someone might know something. Those kind of cards are also play a big part in deduction mechanic.
From time to time you will be presented with a number of cards that brought together generate a certain conclusion. Your goal is to choose the correct side of each "gossip card" to get a combination that would bring you to a conclusion that you consider correct. But do not worry, even incorrect conclusions might lead to an interesting discoveries and situations. Also it is up to you to listen carefully and play with gossips, or ask people around to verify as many gossips as possible so that many of your cards contain solid facts.
Also it is totally possible to finish the game without using any cards at all. I believe this will add replayability and an element of experimentation to gameplay. Hope you would like it!
